The Chicago Terminal Chapter of the PRRT&HS will hold its next meeting on Saturday, October 25, between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM at the Pullman Visitor’s Center, 11141 S. Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.
Our guest speaker will be Nick Fry, who is Curator of the John Barriger III National Railroad Library, a special library within the St. Louis Mercantile Library at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. As Curator, Nick is responsible for maintaining the collection, helping researchers and has been working on digitizing the materials within the collection for distribution via the Internet. One of Nick’s recent projects involved the scanning and posting on the Flickr website the thousands of photographs Mr. Barriger took during his extensive and distinguished career as a railroader, including several hundred on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Nick’s presentation will focus on the photos Mr. Barriger took of the railroad west of Ft. Wayne, including those taken within the Chicago area.
Nick’s posting on Flickr has created quite a stir among all those who have viewed Mr. Barriger’s photographs, and therefore I’m sure Nick’s presentation will generate a lot of discussion at the meeting.
While desirable, membership in the PRRT&HS is not required for attendance at our local meetings. Moreover, while donations are always welcome, there is no admission charge, nor any “arm-twisting” for a donation. Typical attendees consist of a mixture of ex-railroaders, model railroaders, and those interested in the operation and history of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Anyone interested in learning about the Pennsylvania Railroad is invited to attend.
