HO Scale EMD GP9 Pennsy Class EFS17m Announced

Athearn has announced a run of Genesis GP9 diesel locomotives in Pennsylvania Railroad livery. The Pennsy classed these as EFS17m and the road numbers being offered by Athearn all arrived on-site in 1957-58.

Announcement art depicts all four units without trainphone equipment. Ted Andrews wrote on PRR-Modeling "It looks like it is the last phase of the PRR order; the order that did not come eqipped with trainphones. Based on the illustrations, it looks like Athearn will do the post 1962 versions with the larger yellow engine numbers."

The four road numbers are differentiated as follows:

    • #7109 and #7138 are advertised as correct for the era 1957-1968. PENNSYLVANIA is spelled out on the side and there is a radio-equipped sticker on the cab. The horn is placed at the front of the unit and the units have four small fans. As Ted noted, the larger road numbers suggest the era is more correct for 1962 and later.

    • #7140 is advertised as correct for the era 1967-68. It has the keystone emblems at each end of the unit and has the radio-equipped sticker. The horn is placed at the front of the unit and the units have four small fans.

    • #7154 is advertised as correct for the era 1957-1968. PENNSYLVANIA is spelled out on the side but there is not a radio-equipped sticker on the cab. The horn is placed at the middle of the unit and the unit has two large fans. As Ted noted, the larger road numbers suggest the era is more correct for 1962 and later.

I'm in agreement with Ted, that I would like to see the smaller road numbers to accurately portray the "as delivered" look. Hopefully this scheme will be offered in a future release. I also hope for a future release of the GP7 with trainphones.

MSRP is $189.98 standard; $289.98 with Tsunami sound and DCC. Orders are due May 18th with delivery expected in December 2012.
