We model the Southern Pacific’s Mojave Sub as it existed in 1994-95. This was during the lines last great era, as the SP’s merger into the Union Pacific system in 1996 effected the amount of traffic over the line, leaving it not nearly as busy as in earlier years. The layouts “key attraction” is the Tehachapi loop, modeled to scale. During the open house, one will find heavy manifest drags (25+ cars) behind both Southern Pacific and Santa Fe power, along with stack trains and the Swift RoadRailer.
The railroad is built on 2” concrete reinforced with rebar as a sub-roadbed, and stone ballast as roadbed. Two thirds of the railroads sit on a 3% grade meaning most trains require a helper set to reach the summit. Near the summit a working defect detector reports train length, axle count, and speed.
We are not a “garden railroad” per say, we are an “outdoor model railroad.” We strive to produce an accurate replica of the railroads running through the Tehachapi’s in this time period.
Park across the street from house on Carriage Circle. Enter layout through gates next to Whistle (W) sign.
